Individuals Participants


Be an Eclipse Soundscapes (ES) Citizen Scientist

Individual participants can support the Eclipse Soundscapes (ES) project and its scientific mission by doing any or all of the following:

  • Apprentice: Learn about eclipses (and share that eclipse knowledge with friends & family!)
  • Field Researcher Observer: Observe during an upcoming solar eclipse (and share those observations with the ES team!)
  • Field Researcher Data Collector: Collect sound data during an upcoming solar eclipse (and share that data with the ES team!)
  • Data Analyst: Analyze sound data (Available in 2024 & 2025!)

As you complete each level you can earn virtual badges. Learn more about the requirements and details below!

Apprentice

Learn about why solar eclipses occur, the difference between annular and total solar eclipses, and the best US locations to experience the upcoming 2023 annular eclipse and 2024 total solar eclipse.

Field Researcher: Observer

Field Researcher: Data Collector

Data Analyst


Analyze sound data in 2024 and 2025 alongside scientists using your computer or mobile device.

APPRENTICE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Technology: Mobile Device or computer
  • To receive an Apprentice Completion Certificate
  • Age: 13+ (with parent/guardian permission under 18)

FIELD RESEARCHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Eclipse Soundscapes Apprentice Certificate
  • Technology/Materials: Mobile Device
  • Age: 13+ (with parent/guardian permission under 18)

FIELD RESEARCHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Eclipse Soundscapes Apprentice Certificate
  • Technology/Materials: Mobile Device, Eclipse Soundscapes Citizen Scientist Kit
  • Age: 13+ (with parent/guardian permission under 18)

DATA ANALYST REQUIREMENTS:

  • Eclipse Soundscapes Apprentice Certificate
  • Technology: a computer or mobile device and an email address
  • Age: 13+ (with parent/guardian permission under 18)
