Observer Role Data Policy
- What happens with the observation data?
All data will be anonymized with no personally identifiable information maintained with the data. All observation data will be open and available via Zenodo.org, which is a free and open system as of 7/19/2023, for long term data curation. - What, if any, license applies to the use and re-use of observation data from your project?
All Eclipse Soundscapes online content, software products created by Eclipse Soundscapes, and data collected by Eclipse Soundscapes will carry a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA) license. When used, observation data should be attributed as follows: ARISA Lab and volunteer observers with NASA support under award No. 80NSSC21M0008
- Do you provide access to raw data sets or aggregated values?
Raw observation data sets will be freely available on Zenodo.org.
- What URL allows access to the observation data?
The persistent URL is not yet available. When it is available it will be on the Eclipse Soundscapes website and all data will be open and available via Zenodo.org. - What URL or link code allows access to the metadata?
The persistent URL is not yet available. When it is available the metadata and “codebook” that explains that metadata will both be located on Zenodo.org. - Is there Data Access for online Visualization?
There are no plans for integrating online visualization access to the observation data at this time. - Data Download Service Information
Data will be available for bulk FTP download only. - How do you manage informed consent from your participants?
All observations are submitted via an online form. On the first page of this form it is stated that:
“All submitted observations and observation location information will be freely and publicly available with an attribution thanking volunteers for their contribution. Please see the “Open Data Policy” page on the EclipseSoundscapes.org website for more information about this policy and where ES data will be stored.”
Observers are also required to read and consent to a privacy statement making it clear how data they provide is used:
“I understand that any data that I provide will be used for the stated purposes: first, to collect eclipse observation data; second, to generate a certificate (after passing the quiz); and third, to help evaluate how participatory science influences my science identity.
I understand that the Eclipse Soundscapes program is run by ARISA Lab, but a different organization called The Mark USA has been hired to collect the data that I will provide here. I understand that The Mark USA will not share any identifiable information that I provide (for example, my name and email address) with ARISA Lab. Also, The Mark USA will not use my information for any purposes beyond those stated here and will not share or sell my contact information or other data for any reason, unless obligated by law.
I understand that my IP address and geo-location data will not be automatically recorded. However, I understand that I will be asked to self-report my latitude and longitude to help The Eclipse Soundscapes Team and others using this observation information for research purposes to know where the soundscape observation occurred. I understand that participants under the age of 13 will not be asked to provide location or identifiable information, like name or email. I understand that participants under the age of 13 will be asked to either 1. Enter the observation location latitude and longitude that is provided by the adult or guardian helping them or 2.
