Latitude and Longitude

Eclipse Soundscapes (ES) Observers and Data Collectors need to report their location using latitude and longitude. Latitude and longitude has different formats. ES uses Decimal Degrees (DD) format. Please record at least 5 decimal places. Below is some information and resources to help you find your latitude and longitude and make sure it is in the correct format.

Computer

  1. On your computer, open Google Maps.
  2. Right-click the place or area on the map.
    • This will open a pop-up window. You can find your latitude and longitude in decimal format at the top.
  3. To copy the coordinates automatically, left click on the latitude and longitude

Android Phone or Tablet

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app Maps.
  2. Touch and hold an area of the map that isn’t labeled to drop a red pin.
  3.  In the search box, you can find the coordinates.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app Maps.
  2. Touch and hold an area of the map that isn’t labeled to drop a red pin.
  3. At the bottom, tap Dropped pin to find the coordinates.

Format Your Latitude and Longitude Coordinates 

To format your coordinates so they work with the Observer and Data Collector online forms, use decimal degrees (DD) in the following format:

  • Correct: 41.40338, 2.17403
  • Incorrect: 41,40338, 2,17403

Tips:

  • List your latitude coordinates before longitude coordinates.
  • Check that the first number in your latitude coordinate is between -90 and 90.
  • Check that the first number in your longitude coordinate is between -180 and 180.
